MTL stands for mouth-to-lung and refers to the inhaling technique whereby the vapour is first inhaled into the mouth before then being taken into the lungs. MTL is the alternative inhale technique to Direct-to-lung (DTL) which is where the vapour is inhaled directly into the lungs from the vape device which is usually associated with sub-ohm and large vapour cloud vaping. MTL is the more discreet style of vaping, producing minimal vapour clouds and a more flavourful vape experience.
MTL is the most similar inhale style to the smoking of a tobacco cigarette and is the style most vapers first use when switching from tobacco to vaping. It is also the inhale style most vapers stick with throughout their vaping journey making it the most popular choice.
MTL vape kits generally have a more restricted airflow than their DTL counterparts. The more restricted, or tighter airflow, allows for the vapour to first be inhaled into the mouth before then being inhaled into the lungs. Many of the kits in this collection have airflow control so you can tailor the vapour airflow to suit your style with some even offering restricted-direct-to-lung (RDTL) which is a hybrid style between MTL and DTL.
MTL vape kits are also characterised by having relatively low power output and higher resistance coils than their DTL equivalents.
As we have touched on, MTL vaping is the style that is most like smoking a cigarette so is the option we would recommend to anybody looking to switch from smoking to vaping. When coupled with a tobacco or menthol flavour, MTL vaping makes the transition from tobacco a more seamless process. You are not stuck with tobacco or menthol though if you choose a MTL vape kit, there are thousands of flavour options available for this vaping style, all on mulit-buy deals, so you can switch up your flavour as often as you choose.
MTL vaping also heightens the flavour of e-liquid as the vapour is first drawn into the mouth where all the flavour receptors are located.
Another advantage of MTL vaping is that it uses less vape juice and less battery life than DTL vaping. MTL kits generally operate at lower power outputs and produce more discreet vapour meaning both your vape juice and battery life will last that much longer when compared to DTL kits.
MTL vape kits work best with 50/50 e-liquids, nicotine salt vape liquids and high PG e-liquids. The only type of vape juice we would not recommend in a MTL vape kit would be high VG e-liquids such as the type found in large short fill bottles. This is because VG liquids are much thicker than their PG or 50/50 alternatives and most MTL kits do not have the wicking capabilities to deal with the thicker liquids which results in dry burn hits and premature coil burnout.
