What are vape coils and why do I need to replace them?

Vape coils heat up the e-liquid in your vaping device to turn it into vapour. They’re one of the key components of your vape, working with the tank or pod that holds the e-liquid and the battery that powers the device to deliver a satisfying vaping experience.

Because they are heated up regularly, coils eventually burn out and must be replaced. You’ll usually notice an unpleasant burnt taste and a general decrease in performance from your vape when the coil has reached the end of its life. Proper maintenance of your coils is essential to preserve the lifespan of your vaping device and ensure optimal flavour and vapour production.

Coils for vapes are available in different resistances or ohms, allowing you to customise your vaping experience. We’ll cover this in more detail later on.

What coil is right for my vape kit or tank?

It should be noted that there isn’t a universal coil that fits all kits/tanks. Most vapes have their own type of vape coils, so making sure you select the correct one for your setup is essential. A Smok vape kit won’t be compatible with a pack of Aspire coils, for example.

However, you might find that some brands produce coils for vapes that are compatible with different tanks or kits in their range - this information can usually be found in the product description.

What are ohms and which resistance should I choose?

Vape coil resistance is measured in ohms (Ω) and is important in terms of the power that’s supplied to your vape device. Vape coil resistance also affects vapour production. For example, a vape coil with a low ohm requires more battery power but will consume more e-liquid and produce more vapour and more intense flavour.

As a result, the type of vape coil that you use can also affect your vaping experience, which is why it’s important to learn and understand the components of a vape kit regardless of whether you’re using starter kits or you’re a long-term vaper.

The type of vape coil you should choose depends on your vaping preference and style. The rule of thumb is that any vape coil with a coil resistance of more than 1.0ohm is considered to be a mouth to lung (MTL) coil, producing small amounts of vapour. Meanwhile, vape coils with a resistance below 1.0ohm are regarded as sub-ohm coils and are more compatible with sub-ohm vape kits, which produce large clouds of vapour.

Recommended wattage

Bear in mind that coils for vapes have a recommended wattage output, meaning that the compatible device that you use should be set within the suggested wattage range.

If the device has a fixed wattage output, this shouldn’t be an issue as the wattage output for the vape coils of a particular device will match the device’s preset. An example of this is the Innokin Endura T20S Kit, which has a fixed power output of 18W. As such, the Innokin Prism S coils are suitable for this device, both the 0.8ohm vape coil (13W - 14W) and the 1.5ohm vape coil (16W - 18W).

Many recent models of vape kits, especially those with adjustable power levels, include a coil resistance technology that can detect the resistance of the vape coil being used. This coil technology means the device should automatically configure the power level based on the vape coil.

Mouth to lung (MTL) vape coils

MTL vape coils are ideal for cigarette smokers transitioning to vaping as they replicate the sensation of smoking a traditional tobacco cigarette.

Higher resistance coils are best suited for use with higher PG ratio e-liquids that give you a greater throat hit. In particular, e-liquids with higher nicotine strengths are suggested for MTL vape coils.

For new vapers, we recommend starting with MTL vape kits such as the Aspire Flexus Q Kit, which has an easy-to-use design that’s perfect for beginners. The Aspire AF Mesh Coil is completely beginner-friendly and great for MTL inhalation that imitates cigarette smoking. This vape coil can be used with high strength nicotine e-liquids, as well as high PG e-liquids juice and nic salt e-liquids.

As you start to get used to vaping, you may want to try other vaping styles, which is where sub-ohm vape coils come in.

Sub-ohm vape coils

Unlike MTL vape coils, sub-ohm vape coils are designed for direct to lung (DTL) inhalation, meaning that vapour is inhaled straight into your lungs instead of being held in your mouth first like with MTL vapes.

As sub-ohm vape coils require a high power output, you’ll need an e-cigarette device that can accommodate this. At TABlites, our collection of sub-ohm vape kits offer superior power, control, and vapour production for experienced vapers.

For sub-ohm vaping, we suggest using a sub-ohm vape kit like the Smok Nord 4 Kit, a powerful vape kit with an adjustable power range of 5-80W, making it great for both casual and sub-ohm vaping. This vape kit is compatible with the Smok RPM and Smok RPM 2 coils, which both support DTL vaping, working best with 60% VG or higher e-liquids, and creating large vapour clouds as a result of the mesh vape coil build.

How often should vape coils be replaced?

Generally, coils for vapes last anywhere from a few days up to four weeks, but it's important to note that this is an estimate, and individual experiences may differ.

How often vape coils should be replaced depends largely on your personal vaping habits. If you vape heavily, you can expect your coil to burn out more quickly than someone who vapes lightly.

Other factors that can impact the lifespan of your coil include:

  • Type of coil used
  • Type of e-liquid used
  • Duration of puffs
  • Power settings
  • Maintenance practices

You will know your coil needs replacing when you notice a decrease in the flavour of your e-liquid or when you start to experience an unpleasant burnt taste. Check the instructions that come with your vape kit for guidance on how to change the coil - this can vary depending on the device.

How to make your vape coils last longer

There are steps you can take to ensure your coil lasts as long as possible, which can save you money in the long run. One of the most important things to do is properly prime the vape coil to help prevent the likelihood of it burning out too quickly, as well as amplify the flavour and improve your overall vaping experience.

To prime your vape coil:

  1. Drip plenty of e-liquid into the top of the coil, allowing the cotton inside to soak it up. It’s better to use too much e-liquid than too little - you can simply flick the coil to let any excess out once the coil is fully saturated.
  2. Refit the coil and fill your pod or tank with vape juice. Wait 5 minutes before vaping to allow the coil to soak.
  3. Take a few ‘primer puffs’ on the mouthpiece without firing the device. This will help to ensure the cotton wick is fully saturated with e-liquid. If your device has automatic firing simply remove the tank or pod from the battery section first. If the device gurgles or spits at this point you can again blow through it or flick the device to clear the airflow.
  4. Once you’re happy the coil is saturated with liquid, you can fire the device. If possible, adjust the wattage to a lower setting before taking a puff. If there is any burnt flavour, leave the tank for a little longer for the liquid to soak into the coil. You can now gradually increase the power to your desired level.

Regular maintenance is also important to help prolong the lifespan of your coils. Check out our guide to cleaning your vape for more information on how to properly maintain your vape coils.

Other things you can do to make your vape coils last longer include:

  • Vaping less frequently
  • Using a lower wattage
  • Avoiding chain vaping
  • Avoiding highly sweetened e-liquids
  • Using high-quality coils

Tip: If your device is ‘spitting’ or making a gurgling sound when you fire it, it’s likely that the vape coil has become flooded. If this occurs, simply remove the mouthpiece (if you can) and flick the device down towards the floor - preferably outside or over a sink to avoid making a mess! This action will remove any excess liquid from the coil and when you next fire the device the gurgling sound should be gone.
