What are the different types of vape kits?

Vape kits (or e-cigarettes) are battery-powered devices that heat up e-liquid to produce a vapour that is then inhaled. They are typically refillable and rechargeable, making them great alternatives to disposable vapes.

While the basic function of all reusable vape kits is the same, there are various different types available, each best suited for different styles and levels of vaping.

If you’re new to vaping, you may want to take a look at our Vaping for Beginners guide, which will further explain the basics and fundamentals of vaping.

Vape pens

Pen vape kits are amongst the most popular vaping devices and have been around for several years now. They consist of a slim-line stick battery, which resembles a pen, and a refillable tank that holds your choice of vape juice. Most pen kits offer an MTL (mouth to lung) vaping experience and are best used with e-juice that is at least 50% PG or above.

Pen kits all have replaceable coils, which means when the coil ‘burns out’ you can replace it, rather than having to replace the entire vape kit. Pen kits are great for those who are new to vaping as they’re easy to use and often have no fiddly setting to adjust. They are equally loved by more experienced vapers, too!

Pod kits

Pod vape kits are a relatively new design on the vaping scene. Rather than having a tank that holds the e-liquid and screws into the battery, pod kits use a simple ‘pod’ style tank that connects to the battery section using powerful magnets to hold it in place.

The main advantage of pod vape systems is their compact size and portability - these reusable vapes are often no bigger than a disposable vape but are far more cost-effective and better for the environment.

Some pod kits offer replaceable coils, while others require whole pod replacements as the coil is built into the pod. Pod kits work best with 50/50 e-liquids such as nicotine salts, and there are thousands of options available.

Most of the innovation in the vaping industry is currently revolving around pod vape kits, and they are becoming the most popular option with people just starting their vaping journey or those looking to upgrade their existing vape setup.

Starter kits

Starter vape kits are designed with simplicity and ease of use in mind, which makes them perfect for beginners. However, you’ll also find starter kits that are great for more experienced vapers looking to simplify their setup.

Most starter kits are pod-style devices as these often have the simplest and most streamlined designs. Many of the kits in our starter collection are designed to closely replicate the experience of vaping disposables, which means they don’t have any complicated buttons or features and can be activated simply by inhaling on the mouthpiece.

Starter vape bundles are especially great for beginners as they contain everything you need to get started, including e-liquids and replacement coils.

Sub-ohm kits

If you’re looking for huge clouds of dense yet delicious vapour, then you’ll need a sub-ohm vape kit. These vaping devices are tailored to more advanced users, as you’ll need the knowledge to get the best out of the devices and to use them safely.

Most sub-ohm vape kits come with a wide range of coil options, and the devices themselves are packed full of specs and features to provide the ultimate vaping experience. Sub-ohm devices are best used with VG vape juice, often sold in large 50ml or 100ml shortfill bottles.

You should check out our Guide to Sub-Ohm Vaping and Guide to Battery Safety before making a purchase of an advanced sub-ohm kit.

What are the most popular vape kits?

Although different vapers have different preferences, there are certain rechargeable vape kit series that stay consistently popular with new and experienced vapers alike.

If you’re not sure which vape kit to choose, any of these would be a solid place to begin your vaping journey.

  • Aspire Gotek: Offers the ideal blend of style and performance, all packed into streamlined and portable devices that are great for on-the-go vaping.
  • Aspire Flexus: Features long-lasting batteries, adjustable airflow, and powerful flavours for a satisfying vape experience.
  • Vaporesso XROS: Vapes in this collection are known for their versatility, quality, and user-friendly designs.
  • OXVA Xlim: Sleek and compact, these kits are designed to fit perfectly into your bag or pocket.
  • Smok Nord: These vape kits are known for their compact design, ease of use, and versatility.
  • Uwell Caliburn: This series of pod-style vape kits stands out thanks to its innovative flavour-enhancing technology.

Which vape kit should I choose?

If you’re new to vaping, you should always start with a starter vape kit. These MTL devices are designed for ease of use and closely replicate the experience of smoking traditional cigarettes, making them especially great if you’re trying to quit smoking.

Once you’ve familiarised yourself with your starter kit, you can then begin exploring more complex options if you wish. Here are some things to think about when trying to find a refillable vape kit that suits your needs:

  • Ease of use: Do you understand how to use the various operating modes offered by more complex devices, or should you stick with a more simple vape kit?
  • Size: Would you prefer a compact device that’s easier to carry around but has fewer settings and a shorter battery life, or a more bulky device that doesn’t fit in your pocket as easily but offers more options and lasts longer?
  • Convenience: Do you value the convenience of prefilled pods, or would you rather have a wider choice of flavours? Do you prefer the convenience offered by built-in coils, or would you rather benefit from the flexibility and cost savings offered by replacement coils?

Vape kit FAQs

What’s included with a vape kit?

Vape kits typically include everything you need to get started, including an integrated battery, coils, a vape tank or pod, a charging cable, and spare parts. However, this can vary from kit to kit - you might find that some higher-powered devices require separate battery purchases, for example, but this will be made clear in the product description.

Some refillable vape kits also come with e-liquid, although you’ll usually have to purchase this separately. Make sure you choose the right e-liquid for your vape kit as not all will be compatible - for a starter kit, you’ll probably find that nicotine salts or 50/50 VG/PG e-liquids are best.

What type of e-liquid is my vape kit compatible with?

Different vape kits are more compatible with different types of e-liquid, so choosing the right one is important.

If you’re using a starter vape kit, refillable pod vape kit, or any other device that delivers a MTL (mouth to lung) vaping experience, it’s recommended that you use either nicotine salt e-liquids or 50/50 VG/PG e-liquids. Both of these e-liquid types are available in a wide variety of flavours and come in strengths from 3mg to 20mg - you can even opt for nicotine-free e-liquids if you prefer.

If you’re using a more powerful pod kit or a sub-ohm device capable of DTL vaping, it’s recommended that you use shortfill e-liquids in a 70/30 VG/PG blend. Mix them with nicotine shots for a satisfying vape experience with excellent flavour and maximum vapour production.

What do MTL and DTL mean?

MTL (mouth to lung) and DTL (direct to lung) are terms used to describe the different vaping styles of inhaling techniques.

MTL is the style most commonly practised by beginners and closely replicates the sensation of smoking, with the vapour being drawn into your mouth and then into your lungs.

DTL is a more complex style of vaping, which is why it’s typically only associated with more experienced vapers. With this style, the vapour is drawn directly into your lungs and bigger clouds of vapour are produced.

How often do vape kits need to be replaced?

Rechargeable vape kits are designed to be long-lasting and you should only need to replace them every six to twelve months, depending on your vaping habits - they might even last longer than a year if you don’t vape very frequently!

You’ll probably be able to tell when your vape kit needs replacing if it starts to deliver subpar performance even after you’ve replaced the coil, pod, or tank. The device losing its ability to hold a charge is another telltale sign that it needs replacing.

How do vape kits work?

When you fire the vape kit by pressing the button or inhaling on the mouthpiece, the coil inside the tank or pod heats up and vapourises the e-liquid inside. You then inhale this vapour through the mouthpiece.

What vape kit is most similar to cigarettes?

Devices designed for MTL (mouth to lung) vaping provide draws that closely replicate the sensation of smoking. Use these vape kits with nicotine salt e-liquids for a smooth inhale and fast absorption of nicotine into the bloodstream.

Are refillable vape kits cheaper than disposable vapes?

Although refillable vape kits have a higher upfront cost than disposable vapes, refillable vape kits are much more cost-effective in the long run. That’s because the e-liquid used in refillable vape kits is much more affordable than disposable vapes, and it won’t run out as quickly:

  • 1x 10ml bottle of e-liquid = 5 disposable vapes
  • 3x 10ml bottles of e-liquid = 15 disposable vapes
  • 10x 10ml bottles of e-liquid= 50 disposable vapes

How do I refill my vape kit with e-liquid?

The method of refilling a vape kit can vary depending on the type of device you choose. However, most MTL and starter vape kits can easily be refilled simply by removing the pod from the device and filling it with your preferred e-liquid via the filling port.

Always make sure the seal is closed tightly before reinserting the pod into the device to prevent leakage. You should also wait a few minutes for the coil to absorb the e-liquid before vaping to avoid dry hits.

Are vape kits safe to use?

Yes - all genuine, branded vape kits sold in the UK are subject to strict regulations, which means they’re completely safe provided you use them correctly.

Please be aware that counterfeit versions of vape kits from leading brands are common and could be dangerous to use. You should always purchase your vape kits and e-liquids from a trusted vape store like TABlites to ensure both your safety and optimal performance.

How much do vape kits cost?

Vape kits can vary quite considerably in price. Generally speaking, the more complex a vape kit is, the more it will cost. You can get yourself a simple starter vape kit for less than £10, but an advanced vape mod kit could cost you £50 or more.
