What are nic salts?

Nicotine salt (Commonly just called nic salt) is a type of naturally forming nicotine found in leaf tobacco. This makes it different from the usual nicotine (freebase nicotine) found in most e-liquids, which undergoes chemical modification to change the pH level to make it more alkaline. This increases potency without increasing the dose.

In comparison, nicotine salt is almost the same form of nicotine that you would find naturally in tobacco. To make it suitable to be vaped and absorbed by the body it does still need to be modified from its natural state.

Scientists at PAX labs (the creators of JUUL) theorised that if you increased the acidity level the ability of the nicotine salt to be absorbed by the body would be increased. This allows nic salts to be absorbed into the body at a much closer rate to a traditional cigarette than freebase nicotine e-liquids.

The lower pH level also had the added benefit of producing a higher dose of nicotine without a strong throat hit.

What strengths of nic salts are available?

Nicotine salt e-liquid is usually sold in 20mg and 10mg nicotine strengths and you may find some ranges also available in 5mg.

  • 20mg (2.0%) Nicotine - the highest strength e-liquid allowed in the UK. Best suited to heavy smokers and vapers.
  • 10mg (1.0%) Nicotine - considered medium strength. This has been our most popular strength of nic salt e-liquid.
  • 5mg (0.5%) Nicotine - currently the lowest nic salt e-liquid strength available. Ideal for very light smokers and vapers or for those looking to lower their nicotine intake.
