What is e-liquid?

E-liquid, also known as vape juice or vape liquid, is the flavoured liquid that is heated up in vape kits to produce vapour. Each blend delivers different flavour profiles and nicotine strengths, with options to suit every vaper.

E-liquids in the UK and EU are made up of only 5 key ingredients:

  • Propylene glycol (PG)
  • Vegetable glycerine (VG)
  • Food-grade flavourings
  • Nicotine (optional)
  • Water

All of these ingredients are food-grade, which means they’re completely safe to be vaped. However, e-liquids can be dangerous if they are swallowed directly or come into contact with skin, so be sure to store them safely and keep them out of reach of children or pets.

Understanding PG and VG ratios

To get the most out of your vape kit, you need to choose the right PG/VG blend. Different ratios will impact the throat hit, flavour, and vapour production of your device.

Propylene Glycol (PG) is a thin, flavourless liquid commonly used as a food additive - which means you’ve probably had it before! It’s great for delivering strong flavours and provides a strong throat hit that’s similar to the experience of smoking a traditional cigarette. E-liquids with a high PG ratio are best suited for mouth to lung (MTL) vape kits like vape pens or pod systems.

Vegetable Glycerin (VG) is a thicker, sweeter liquid, commonly used as a food sweetener and stabiliser. It’s great for creating large clouds of vapour and works best with sub-ohm vape kits for direct to lung (DTL) vaping, where a smooth inhale and rich flavour is preferred.

What are the different e-liquid types?

There are several different types of e-liquid to choose from, each providing a different vaping experience.

High VG

High VG e-liquid refers to vape juice with a higher ratio of VG to PG. This type of e-liquid is ideal for those looking to produce big clouds of vapour and is most compatible with sub-ohm devices.

High PG

High PG e-liquid refers to vape juice with a higher ratio of PG to VG. This type of e-liquid is usually a freebase nicotine e liquid and is ideal for those looking for an excellent throat hit with incredible flavour and is most compatible with MTL devices like pen-style vape kits, starter kits, and pod kits.

50/50

50/50 e-liquids are made from a 50/50 blend of VG and PG, offering the best of both worlds in terms of throat hit and vapour production. They are most compatible with pod systems, starter kits, and advanced MTL kits.

Nicotine salts

Nicotine salts e liquid is known for providing a smoother throat hit and faster nicotine satisfaction, making them ideal for smokers transitioning to vaping. They’re most compatible with pod kits and other MTL devices.

nic salt e liquids are generally available in two strengths: 20mg is best suited to heavy smokers and vapers, while 10mg is a great option for those trying to cut down their nicotine intake.

Shortfill

Shortfill e-liquids are large bottles of nicotine-free vape juice that are filled to 80% capacity, with space to add a nicotine shot to achieve your desired nicotine strength. They contain a higher ratio of VG to PG, making them most compatible with DTL and sub-ohm devices.

What nicotine strength should I choose?

If you’ve started vaping to help you quit smoking, the nicotine strength you should choose depends on how many cigarettes you typically smoke per day.

If you’re using a starter vape kit or other MTL device (which is recommended for those making the switch from tobacco cigarettes), base your e-liquid nicotine strength on the following:

  • 1-5 cigarettes per day = 5mg nic salts or 3mg 50/50 or high PG
  • 6-14 cigarettes per day = 10mg nic salts or 6mg 50/50 or high PG
  • 15+ cigarettes per day = 20mg nic salts or 12mg 50/50 or high PG

E-liquids in the UK are restricted by law to prevent any dangerously high levels of nicotine from being consumed. 20mg nicotine e-liquid is the strongest vape juice that can legally and safely be bought in the UK.

E-liquid FAQs

How long will one bottle of e-liquid last me?

This depends on the size of the bottle and how frequently you vape. Most e-liquids come in a 10ml bottle, which should last the average vaper around one week. However, if you’ve a heavy vaper, you might find that one 10ml bottle only lasts you a few days.

Shortfill e-liquids can be purchased in 50ml or 100ml bottles which naturally means they’ll last longer, but remember that they’re only compatible with DTL and sub-ohm kits. A 100ml shortfill bottle should last nearly a full month for even the heaviest of vapers.

Does it matter what type of e-liquid I choose?

Yes! The e-liquid you choose should match the capabilities of your vaping device. MTL and starter vape kits are most compatible with 50/50 or high PG e-liquids, while DTL and sub-ohm devices are most compatible with high VG e-liquids.

Is using e-liquid cheaper than smoking cigarettes?

Yes! Vaping e-liquids is much cheaper than smoking cigarettes. The cost of cigarettes continues to climb year on year, while the price of vape kits and e-liquids has remained static.

Can I vape without nicotine?
