HOW DO DISPOSABLE VAPES WORK?
Disposable vapes are ready to use out of the packet, they will provide approximately 600 puffs. When you inhale on the mouthpiece and no vapour is produced, dispose of the device and start a fresh one.
Disposable e-cigarettes are constructed from various parts:
- Battery;– The integrated battery powers the device. The battery is pre-charged and single-use.
- Cartridge/Pod– Reservoir chamber that holds the e-liquid. Prefilled and cannot be reused.
- Atomiser Coil– The atomiser coil is the heating element. Around the atomiser coil, there is a cotton-wicking material that delivers e-liquid to the coil. When the device is activated the battery sends power to the coil to heat the coil. When the e-liquid contained within the pod cartridge is heated, it produces a vapour.
- Nic Salt E-Liquid– Nic salt or nicotine salt e-liquids deliver incredible flavour and allow you to vape higher-strength e-liquids without a harsh throat hit. They provide a super smooth inhale and closely replicate the sensation of smoking a regular cigarette.
- Outer Casing– The outer casing shell holds all the parts together.

For many years, disposables were used primarily by new vapers and were designed to emulate the experience of smoking a cigarette as closely as possible. These “cig-a-like” devices came in the shape, size and design of a traditional cigarette.

HOW TO VAPE A DISPOSABLE DEVICE
One of the first questions you might have when looking at all the vaping options on the market today (and there are a lot) is “How do you use a disposable vape?”
Short answer: Disposable devices are simply activated by inhaling on the mouthpiece.
The majority are draw-activated, which means all you need to do with a disposable vape is open the box and take a drag. This will power the kit on and provide you with a satisfying vape experience instantly and without any fuss.
Some disposable vapes will have button activated mechanisms, which means you just have to press a button while inhaling to activate the heating coil. However, among the new generation of disposables (including Elf Bars, Elux Bars, and Lost Mary products), this is becoming less common, and the majority of popular disposable vapes on the market today are draw-activated.

Why does my vape (disposable) taste burnt?
If your disposable tastes burnt, you’re probably experiencing a dry hit! If you’re brand new to vaping and are using a single-use vape, this is likely to be your first time experiencing a dry hit. You may rush to the conclusion that your vape bar is broken, but that’s not necessarily the case.
A dry hit happens when you draw from your device and there's not enough juice on the wicking material inside. So rather than the taste of your e-liquid, you get a hit of burnt cotton which is nobody's favourite experience.
If you’re using a more advanced vape with removable components, then the issue might be with your setup, your wick, or your e-liquid. However, if you’re just using a simple disposable vape, then all it means is that you’re out of juice! Simply throw away that vape and start a new one.

There are so many different options available in the world of vaping today that it can seem impossible to make the right choice and get the best for you. Cons of Disposables

Non-refillable vapes are worse than refillable vapes from a sustainable perspective, as they are single-use. These vapes are made almost entirely of plastic and metal, and their components are fully integrated. The battery components of all spent vapes should be recycled, but uptake in this kind of recycling isn’t high, and some local authorities don’t even offer it as a local government service.
These tiny vapes are also much less powerful than more advanced vapes. If you’re interested in upgrading your vaping experience, you’ll likely need to switch to a pod vape, sub-ohm vape or other kinds of cartridge vape. Upgrading will allow you to experiment with different styles of vaping and different types of e-liquid, which isn’t possible with a disposable vape.
E-LIQUID IN DISPOSABLE VAPES EXPLAINED
The e-liquid that you get in single-use vapes is the same as you find in traditional refillable vapes. Disposables, like regular e-liquids, come in a range of flavours, compositions and nicotine strengths. It can be a bit of trial and error to get the right vape for you, which is why disposable is a great starter option. They're affordable and available in a massive range of flavours and strengths, so if you don't get on with one type of disposable, there are plenty more to try out there!
Which strength do I need?
Like all vapes, disposables are available in a range of nicotine strengths. The right nicotine strength differs from person to person and can be affected by lots of different factors. Some of these factors include:
- How long you have been vaping for
- How often do you vape
- How much vapour you inhale per puff
- How long do your vape sessions last
- Your vaping style
- The type of e-liquid you use
- How many cigarettes you're used to smoking per day (if you're vaping to quit smoking)
The standard nicotine level in most vapes (including big brands like Elux disposables or Elf Bar disposables) is either 10mg/ml or 20mg/ml. In line with TRPR rules, nicotine products like e-liquid can't be stronger than 20mg/ml.
If you feel lightheaded when you’re vaping or get a sore, scratchy sensation in your throat as you inhale, you might be on too high of a nicotine dosage. Try switching to a lower nicotine Vape Juice, or even a nicotine-free e-liquid!
On the other hand, if you find that when vaping, you aren't getting enough nicotine to satisfy your cravings, you might want to look into a stronger e-liquid or try a nicotine salt e-liquid.
Nic salts use a slightly different chemical process to extract nicotine from the tobacco leaf. This means that it reacts slightly differently in the body compared to traditional nicotine (known as freebase nicotine). The advantage of nicotine salt e-liquid is that it delivers a stronger nicotine rush while still providing a smooth throat hit, and without requiring higher (and more dangerous) doses of nicotine.

If you want to look a little deeper, we need to look at the initial cost and how much vape time you get for your money with each product.
Based on data from the ONS, the current price of a 20 pack of cigarettes in the UK is a little under £13. This figure has risen steadily over the last 10 years and shows no signs of decreasing any time soon!
The average smoker smokes around 10 cigarettes per day. This means that they are spending around £6.50 each day on tobacco cigarettes, or £2370 a year.
The average disposable vape on the market today costs somewhere in the region of £4.95 for a single unit or 5 for £20, and most disposables contain 600 puffs which is the rough equivalent of 20 cigarettes. These last the average user 1 to 3 days, but this will be dependent on how much they are used and the length of the draw.
When the disposable vape is finished the entire unit will need to be replaced each time as the battery is non-rechargeable. This means that the average vaper will pay just over £2.50 per day for a disposable vape.
If we multiply these numbers to cover a year the cost of smoking would be just over £2370 and the cost of using disposables would be just over £910.

When are disposable vapes getting banned?
You should be aware by now that the UK Government plans to implement a ban on disposables on the 1st of April 2025.
This is due to 2 things, Firstly the rise in youth vaping fueled by dodgy shops selling age-restricted products to anyone and everyone without care including children. These are often illegal products that do not comply with the restrictions on products sold by reputable companies like ourselves.
The second factor leading to a ban on these products is the environmental damage done by careless and reckless disposal of single-use vape products. This waste is what led TABlites to partner with the Green Wings project to take this rubbish away from our streets and allow the various components to be properly and responsibly recycled.
When disposable vapes are banned there will still be a great selection of vapes available to purchase. These are both better quality and more sustainable when compared to single-use vapes.
Are disposable vapes legal?
Most disposables are legal in the UK. This does however depend on the liquid capacity of the device and the strength of the nicotine. The Tobacco and Related Products Regulations (TRPR) are a set of UK laws that regulate the sale of traditional tobacco products such as cigarettes and cigars, but also the production and distribution.
Disposable kits in the EU are regulated by the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) rules. There were no significant changes to vaping regulations as a result of Brexit, and the laws originally implemented by the TPD remain in place in the UK today. That means that if you see references to TPD rules, they’ll be largely the same as TRPR rules.
Some of the key rules surrounding vapes in the UK include:
- E-cigarette tanks, including disposable vapes, are limited to a capacity of no more than 2ml
- TRPR rules restrict the maximum volume of e-liquid refill bottles to 10ml.
- E-liquids are restricted to a maximum nicotine strength of 20mg/ml
- All nicotine-containing products and their packaging are required by law to be child-resistant and tamper-evident.
- E-liquids sold in the UK are not allowed to contain certain ingredients including colourings, caffeine and taurine.
- Vapes and e-liquids have a range of stringent labelling and warning requirements and their packaging.
- All vapes and e-liquids in the UK need to be registered with the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) before being sold to consumers.
Lost Mary and other similar disposables are perfectly legal to purchase in the UK providing you’re 18 or older and the product is within the specifications set by TRPR/TPD. This means that they need to contain no more than 2ml of e-liquid and can be no stronger than 20mg (2%) of nicotine.
Products that boast higher strengths or contain more e-liquid may actually be counterfeit or have been intended for the international market. This means that they are therefore illegal to sell in the UK.
An increasing number of vapes are being seized by trading standards, which allows users to feel more confident in their purchases and put a stop to illegal, dangerous and counterfeit vapes being sold on the UK market. It is recommended you only purchase vape products from a well-established vape store like TABlites for your own safety.
Why are some disposable vapes illegal?
There are some disposable vape products that are not allowed to be sold by registered and reputable retailers like TABlites. Products like the Elux Legend 3500 are illegal in the UK due to the liquid capacity being greater than 2ml.
10ml capacity devices like the Elux Legend 3500 are not being sold in the UK by reputable companies. They are considerably more likely to be dangerous counterfeits than devices which meet the legal limits in the UK, as fewer checks are being carried out to ensure a safe product for the end user.
Are disposable vapes safe?
Yes, these vapes are safe to use, as long as you are buying from a reputable store. The e-liquid used in disposable vapes has been tested and submitted under the TRPR here in the UK
All the ingredients and components of the device are the same as those you would find in other vaping products available from reputable vape stores.
So long as you are buying a genuine product you are buying a safe product. Avoid purchasing from non-vape stores as they will have limited product knowledge and be unable to ensure their products are safe or offer advice before you buy.
Remember, as with all electronic cigarette vape products, disposables are only ever intended for adult users who are trying to quit or continue to quit smoking.
Are disposables bad for you?
Like all vapes, disposable electronic cigarettes are generally considered to be far less dangerous than regular cigarettes.
There are no chemicals like tar or carbon monoxide produced when vaping, and there is no combustion (burning) either.
