Vape coils, are a component in the vape kit that evaporate the e-liquid. Coils are responsible for producing the signature vapour that vapesare known for.
As an important part of a vape, vape coils need to be maintained and replaced regularly to ensure that your device is in optimal condition for excellent performance. Vape coils are fitted inside the tank or pod of your vape. The coils are fitted using a push fit mechanism or screw fit, that allows you to just push or screw the coil inside the tank.
Vape coils are at the heart of e-cigarette devices, which is why you need to take extra care of them to preserve your device’s lifespan, to provide exceptional flavour and production of vapour.
It should be noted that most vapes have their own type of vape coils. When replacing coils, you should buy the specific manufacturer vape coils. Some brands also have different types of models, you must ensure the vape model you have matches your new vape coil.
Vape coil resistance is measured in ohms (Ω) and is important in terms of the power that is being supplied to your vape device. Vape coil resistance also affects vapour production. For example, a vape coil with a low ohm requires more battery power, but will consume more e-liquid and produce more vapour and intense flavour.
As a result, the type of vape coil that you use can also affect your vaping experience, which is why it’s important to learn and understand the components of a vape kit regardless of whether you’re using starter kits or you’re a long term vaper.
The type of vape coil that you choose is dependent on your vaping preference and style. The rule of thumb is that any vape coil with a coil resistance of more than 1.0ohm is considered to be a mouth to lung (MTL) coil, producing small amounts of vapour.
Meanwhile, vape coils with a coil resistance of below 1.0ohm are regarded as sub ohm coils and are more suitable for ‘cloud chasing’ or sub ohm vaping, where huge clouds of vapour are able to be created. For those wanting a completely different take on e-cigarettes, sub ohm vaping offers a unique vaping experience, especially for starter vapers who wouldn’t have had the opportunity to experience this vaping style otherwise.
Please note that vape coils have a recommended wattage output, meaning that the compatible device that you use should be set within the suggested wattage range.
If the device has a fixed wattage output, then this shouldn’t concern you as the wattage output for the vape coils of aparticular device will match the device’s preset. An example of this is the Innokin Endura T20S Kit, which has a fixed power output of 18W. As such, the Innokin Prism S coils are suitable for this device, both the 0.8ohm vape coil (13W - 14W) and the 1.5ohm vape coil (16W - 18W).
Many recent models of vape kits, especially those with adjustable power levels, include a coil resistance technology that can detect the resistance of the vape coil being used. This coil technology means the device should automatically configure the power level based on the vape coil.
MTL vape coils are ideal for cigarette smokers transitioning to vaping as they replicate the sensation of smoking a traditional tobacco cigarette.
Higher resistance coils are best suited to be used withhigher PG ratio e-liquid that’ll give you a greater throat hit. In particular, e-liquids of higher nicotine strengths are suggested for MTL vape coils.
This will feel incredibly familiar for new vapers, which is exactly why we recommend starting with vape kits that support MTL vape coils – such as the Aspire PockeX AIO Kit, which has an easy-to-use design that’s perfect for beginners.
The Aspire PockeX 1.2ohm Kanthal coil is completely beginner-friendly and great for MTL inhalation that imitates cigarette smoking. This vape coil can be used with high strength nicotine e-liquids, as well as high PG juice, 50/50 liquids, and nic salt e-liquids.
As you start to get used to vaping, you may want to try other vaping styles, which is where sub ohm vape coils come in.
Unlike MTL vape coils, sub ohm vape coils are designed for direct to lung (DTL) inhalation, meaning that vapour is inhaled straight into your lungs instead of being held in your mouth first like with MTL vapes.
As sub ohm vape coils require a high power output, you’ll need an e-cigarette device that can accommodate this. At TABlites, our collection of sub ohm vape kits offer absolute power, control, and vapour for experienced vapers.
For sub ohm vaping, we suggest using a sub ohm vape kit like the VOOPOO Vinci X 2 Kit, a powerful vape kit with an adjustable power range of 5-80W, making it great for both casual and sub ohm vaping.
This vape kit is compatible with all VOOPOO PnP series coils – but it already comes with the PNP-VM1 0.3ohm vape coil and the PNP-VM6 0.15ohm vape coil. Both support DTL vaping, working best with 60% VG or higher e-liquids, and creating large vapour clouds as a result of the mesh vape coil build.
Now that you have a better understanding of vape coils, it’s time to learn about how to know when vape coils should be changed. Although vaping is an enjoyable experience for many, when investing in a vape kit, you should be aware of the maintenance needed to ensure that your device performs at its best.
There are signs you can look out for when thinking of changing your vape coil, learning how to identify these signs will keep your vape kit running smoother for longer. How frequently you use your device can impact how often you may need to change your vape coil – but, regardless of whether you’re a heavy vaper or not, it’s suggested to replace your vape’s coil at least once a month.
Particularly, if you start experiencing a burnt taste whenever you take a puff, immediately stop using the vape as you may have pushed your vape’s coil past its lifespan and now the vape is burning the coil. Not only is this unpleasant to inhale, but it may also be harmful to your health.
Change your vape coil as soon as possible to avoid more burnt hits.
Taking the necessary steps to ensure that your coils last is ideal if you’re looking to save money in the long run, as regularly having to change vape coils due to poor maintenance can end up being costly. But, how can you make sure that your vape coils last as long as they’re meant to without early damage?
Firstly, whenever you install a new coil or even when you purchase a new e-cigarette, it’s crucial that you prime the vape coil to help prevent the likelihood of it burning out, amplifying the flavour and improving your overall vaping experience.
In terms of using the vape, taking draws in quick succession may also cause your coil’s wick to dry out faster as you’re not allowing it to soak up the e-liquid. This type of chain vaping can quickly kill your vape’s coil.
To avoid this, wait at least 30 seconds before taking another puff so that the wick is given enough time to absorb the proper amount of e-liquid.
