E-Liquid

Vape Juice For Every Vaper

What Is E-Liquid/Vape Juice?

E-liquid or vape juice is the consumable liquid product that goes into every vape on the market. Vape juices are available in a vast range of flavours, compositions, price points, and strengths, so there is something for every kind of vaper out there!

This variety is great for consumers, but it can also make things confusing, particularly for beginner vapers. At TABlites, we have all the expertise you need to help you choose the right e-liquid for your vaping needs. From flavours to strengths, to composition, there are lots of factors that can affect how your juice performs, and the vaping experience you get.

E-liquids in the UK and EU are made up of only 5 key ingredients:

  • Propylene glycol (PG)
  • Vegetable glycerine (VG)
  • Food-grade flavourings
  • Nicotine
  • Water

All of these ingredients have been tested extensively and are safe to be vaped - we’ll talk more about them later! However, if swallowed directly or they come into contact with skin they can be dangerous, which is why it is important to safely and securely store your e-liquids, especially if you have small children or animals in the house!

You may have heard of e-liquids containing colourings, caffeine, taurine, THC, and other ingredients. However these are illegal to be sold in the UK, and no reputable supplier will sell eliquids with these additional ingredients.

Is Vape Juice safe?

The mixture of PG, VG, flavourings, nicotine and water is what allows you to create vape clouds, and to inhale the nicotine through your lungs. In comparison, traditional tobacco cigarettes create smoke through combustion - by burning the tobacco and cigarette papers. This means you’re not only inhaling the thousands of different compounds in tobacco but also carbon monoxide and other dangerous substances through the smoke. There are more than 70 known carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) in burnt tobacco smoke from traditional cigarettes and cigars.

Vaping is considerably better for your health and much safer than smoking, and vaping is recommended by the NHS as an effective method for helping you cut down and quit smoking tobacco cigarettes.

What Are VG and PG Ratios?

Pg Vs VG Vape Juice Banner. PG Pros: Stronger Throat Hit, Thinner Consistency, Less Vapour Production, Mouth to Lung (MTL) Inhale, For Use In Standard Devices, Replicates A Real Smoking Sensation, Requires a High Resistance Coil. VG Pros: Smoother, Thicker Consistency, More Vapour Production, Direct to Lung (DTL) Inhale, For Use In Sub-Ohm Devices, Feels Different To Cigarette Smoking, Requires a Low Resistance Coil.

The VG/PG ratio of an e-liquid tells you what percentage of vegetable glycerine and propylene glycol the vape juice contains as a base. This is measured before the addition of nicotine or flavourings, so the ratio always adds up to 100%.

PG and VG are two of the most important terms you’ll see when you’re buying e-liquids. PG stands for Propylene Glycol, and VG stands for Vegetable Glycerine. These are two of the key ingredients in e-liquids.

You can get high-PG e-liquids, high-VG e-liquids (generally 60/40 ratios upwards), as well as 50/50 PG/VG mixes. Different ratios will provide you with a slightly different vaping experience, and they’ll also be better suited for different types of devices.

What Is Propylene Glycol (PG)?

Propylene glycol is commonly used as a food additive, so you’ve probably had it before! It is a fairly thin, odourless and colourless liquid which is slightly thicker than water. It can be found in food colourings, processed foods, soft drinks, some medicines and ointments, hygiene and cosmetic products, and of course, e-liquids.

A high-PG e-liquid is the most popular variety of nicotine liquid among on-the-go vapers and those who use e-liquid to quit smoking. They provide a strong throat hit and offer the closest experience to smoking a tobacco cigarette. PG is naturally flavourless and odourless, so is great for more complex or savoury vape flavours, and delivers a great nicotine rush which helps to squash any cravings.

The smallest vaping devices like disposables, small pod kits and vape pens, work best with high-PG e-liquids because they will have smaller atomizer coils. Coils like these need thin vape juice to work reliably. High-PG or 50/50 e-liquids are best for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping, as they can better carry stronger nicotine concentrations. Finally, High-PG liquids need to be vaped at a lower temperature than high-VG vape liquids, to prevent overheating or burning of the vape components.

What Is Vegetable Glycerine (VG)?

Vegetable glycerine is derived from plants like soybeans, coconut or palm trees. It is naturally quite thick and viscous, and is clear, with a sweet taste and smell.

It’s commonly used as a food sweetener and stabiliser, but can also be found in a range of different medications, and even in toothpaste!

Direct-to-lung vapers and cloud chasers (people who look for high vapour production from their vape) prefer high-VG e-liquids. The large, dense, fluffy clouds of vapour that we all recognise and associate with vaping are only produced by this particular vaping technique. High-VG e-liquids are perfect for this style of vaping.

Since high-VG e-liquids are typically a little thicker than their PG equivalents, a higher vaping temperature is required, which is why they are generally better suited to more powerful and advanced vapes.

High-VG e-liquids are great for sweet and dessert-flavoured vapes, as VG naturally has a slightly sweet taste and smell. The natural sweetness of VG is often used as part of the flavour profile.

What Nicotine Strength Should You Use?

This is one of the most common questions we get from our customers when it comes to choosing a new e-liquid. There are two main factors to consider when you’re deciding on the right nicotine strength for you - your tolerance and the type of vape you use.

Nicotine strength is important for many vapes, particularly those who are vaping for the first time to help them quit smoking. One of the hardest things to kick when quitting smoking is the dependence on nicotine that cigarettes give you.

Nicotine is a safe substance for adults to inhale the vast majority of the time in appropriate quantities. None of the direct harm that comes from smoking cigarettes comes from the nicotine inhaled. However, nicotine does create a dependency, which is why quitting smoking cigarettes (which contain a range of harmful substances) is so difficult. It’s important to note that there is no difference in the safety of high-nicotine and low-nicotine e-liquids, as long as you are over the legal vaping age of 18.

When it comes to nicotine strength, e-liquids in the UK are restricted by law, to prevent any dangerously-high levels of nicotine from being consumed. Before 2016, 10ml e-liquids with a nicotine strength of up to 24 milligrams per millilitre (mg/ml) (2.4%) were allowed to be sold. However, with the introduction of new legislation, this limit was reduced to 20mg/ml. 20mg/ml (2%) nicotine e-liquid is the strongest e-liquid you can legally and safely buy in the UK and is TPD compliant.

You can also buy completely nicotine-free e-liquids for your vape!

The right vape juice strength for your device

Different vaping devices will work best with different nicotine strengths, based on the way the device is designed to be used. Sub-ohm and more advanced vape mods, for example, are better suited to lower nicotine or nicotine salt e-liquids. This is because these devices are designed for direct-to-lung vaping, which can feel quite harsh and scratchy on your throat if you have too much nicotine in your e-liquid.

Smaller vape kits designed for mouth-to-lung vaping, however, can better handle a higher nicotine concentration, as the vapour is held in your mouth for a moment before inhaling. This results in a more comfortable experience if you’re using a high-nicotine e-liquid.

A good rule of thumb for determining the kind of e-liquid for your device is to look at the mouthpiece! If it is smaller than the end of a cigarette, it’s probably a mouth-to-lung vape. If it’s larger, chances are it’s better for direct-to-lung vaping.

The right nicotine strength for you

The right nicotine concentration for your vape is only one part of the puzzle. Different people absorb nicotine differently, both when smoking cigarettes and when vaping!

With that said, you might find you absorb nicotine differently from vapes and e-liquids compared to tobacco cigarettes. If you find your vape is scratchy to inhale or is making you feel lightheaded all, stop using your e-liquid straight away and switch to a lower-strength vape juice.

If you’re finding that you feel the need to vape very often, or your nicotine cravings aren’t satisfied when you vape, then it might be worth switching to a higher nicotine concentration. You can also try nicotine salt e-liquids, which provide a more intense nicotine hit, without actually being stronger than regular e-liquids.

Freebase vapes vs Nic Salts

Freebase Vs Nic Salt vape juice. Freebase Pros: Slower nicotine absorption, All strength options, Harsher throat hit at high strengths, Purest form of nicotine, SUitable for most vaping styles, More cloud production and Can be used in all vape devices. Nic Salt Pros: Fast nicotine absorption, Medium to high strength options, Smoother throat hit at high strengths, Found naturally in the tobacco leaf, Ideal for mouth to lung (MTL) vaping, Less cloud production and is Best for use in low wattage devices.

As well as choosing the right strength of nicotine in your e-liquid, choosing the right form of nicotine in your e-liquid can also be something you have to consider.

The two forms of nicotine you can choose between are freebase nicotine and nicotine salts (sometimes called nic salts).

  • Freebase nicotine is the same kind of nicotine you find in traditional tobacco cigarettes. It comes directly from the tobacco leaf and is then extracted into the nicotine formula that goes into e-liquids. Freebase nicotine also gives vapers a strong “throat hit” in the same way that smoking tobacco cigarettes does.
  • Nicotine salts, on the other hand, go through an additional chemical process, which refines them into the purest form of nicotine there is. Nic salts are actually crystallised through this process, making them look like salt! When they are mixed with your e-liquid, the crystals dissolve to give you a smooth e-liquid with an intense nicotine rush. Nic salts give you a stronger rush than freebase nicotine, as the crystals are more quickly and easily absorbed by the body.

Nic salts can also be purchased in the form of “nic shots”, which are added to a shortfill e-liquid. Shortfill bottles contain no nicotine, which means they can be larger than the 10ml regulations nicotine-containing e-liquids are subject to. Vapers will then add their own concentrated “nic shot” to the liquid.

Aside from differences in the natural chemical composition of the nicotine in freebase and nic salt e-liquids, the biggest practical difference for vapers is their strength. While any e-liquid can have any nicotine strength, you’re more likely to find freebase nicotine in lower-concentration e-liquids (below 10 mg/ml). Nicotine salts are more smoothly absorbed by the body, which means they can be used in higher concentrations without discomfort. You’ll often find nic salt e-liquids in strengths up to 20mg/ml

E-Liquids vs. Smoking

Vape juices, nicotine salts, nicotine shot, and other vaping products are successful in aiding smoking cessation due to the wide range of nicotine strengths on offer. But how do vape liquids differ from smoking?

What Do Vape Liquids and Cigarettes Contain?

Cigarettes are formed from rolling dried tobacco leaves inside paper. However, there’s much more to cigarettes than just these two ingredients. According to Cancer Research UK, cigarettes release over 5,000 chemicals when they are lit – at least 70 of these can cause cancer, and many others are poisonous.

On the other hand, e-liquids are made of four main ingredients: propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), and flavourings, all of which are regarded as safe food additives, and of course nicotine.

Vape liquids can come with varying ratios of PG to VG, which depends on the type of vapers in question. For example, for a smoother throat hit, you might opt for 50/50 e-liquids – whereas if you want a throat hit more akin to a traditional cigarette, a high-PG e-liquid might be a better option. Meanwhile, advanced sub-ohm vapers will likely prefer high-VG e-liquids.

Although nicotine is a key ingredient, this chemical itself can pose some health risks. Despite this, vaping rather than is said to be at least 95% safer than smoking – you can even get tobacco e-liquid flavours for a traditional cigarette taste – making it a fantastic alternative to cigarettes.

Vapourising vs Combustion

Unsurprisingly, vape liquids are vapourised. Essentially, vape liquids stored in the tank are heated by a coil within vaping devices, giving off clouds of vapour.

The amounts of vapour depend on the VG to PG ratio in the e-liquid. For sub-ohm vaping, you’ll want to create large plumes of vapour to make beautiful vapour clouds, for example, whereas others might prefer something more discrete.

On the other hand, cigarettes use combustible tobacco, which is then set alight before inhaling. Instead of a harmless vapour, this creates smoke that is full of dangerous chemicals.

Is There a Difference in Cost?

Average adult cigarette smokers in the UK smoke an average of 10-15 cigarettes a day. This can amount to over £2,400 every year. However, vaping and vape liquids are much more cost-effective – even with the start-up costs and price of a device once you decide to switch to vaping.

With this in mind, vaping is a more affordable alternative to tobacco – and, to help you begin your vaping journey, we’ll give you some advice on cheap vapes for beginners below.
