If you’re a new vaper making the switch to e-cigarettes from tobacco cigarettes – whether that’s to help you quit smoking or simply because you’re turning to vaping as an alternative to tobacco – TABlites is here to help you with all of your vaping needs.

Although you may be making the ‘healthier’ switch to vaping from tobacco products, there are still some precautions to be aware of – such as possible detrimental effects to the heart, lungs and oral health

That said, vaping is still generally concluded to be less harmful than smoking tobacco cigarettes. In fact, Public Health England maintains that e-cigarettes are 95% safer than smoking. This makes vaping an excellent alternative to smoking.

As your one-stop shop for vape products, you can rest assured that everything you need to help transition into vaping can be found at TABlites. In particular, we supply a wide range of vape coils from a variety of reputable vape manufacturers, so you don’t need to worry about struggling to find a suitable vape coil to replace the old one in your vape device.

If you’re a beginner to vaping, you may be wondering, ‘What are vape coils?’ Well, you’re in the right place – below, you’ll find the answer to this question and more.

What Are Vape Coils?

Vape coils, sometimes also referred to as atomisers or atomiser coils, are key components of a vape device that evaporate the e-liquid, producing the signature vapour that e-cigarettes are known for.

As an important part of an e-cigarette, vape coils need to be maintained and replaced regularly to ensure that your device is in optimal condition for excellent performance. Vape coils are fitted inside the tank or pod of your vape, commonly with a screw in design, but many recent models of vapes also use a push fit mechanism that allows you to just push the coil inside the tank.

There are three elements to a vape coil:

  1. Casing – As the name suggests, this element simply encases the other parts for easy installation in a vape tank or pod
  2. Wicking material – Usually of organic cotton material, it absorbs the e-liquid in the vape tank for the coil to heat up
  3. The heating element (coil) – Typically wrapped around the wicking material and made from resistance wire or strips of resistance mesh, powered by the device’s battery, it essentially heats up the e-liquid and turns it into vapour for inhalation

As you can see, vape coils are at the heart of e-cigarette devices, which is why you need to take extra care of them to preserve your device’s lifespan, and to provide exceptional flavour and production of vapour.

It should be noted that many vape kits come with their own type of vape coils, meaning that when replacing coils, you should buy vape coils from the same manufacturer as your device, especially if coils themselves are specific to a certain vape model.

For example, if you purchase a Smok vape kit, Smok coils that have been made specifically for your Smok vape model are ideal for both reliability and durability of your device.

What Is Vape Coil Resistance?

Vape coil resistance, measured in ohms (Ω), is important in terms of the power that is being supplied to your vape device, and that it directly affects vapour production. For instance, a coil with a low ohm requires more battery power, but will consume more e-liquid and produce more vapour and intense flavour, compared to a high ohm coil that consumes less power, less e-liquid, and produces less vapour.

As a result, the type of coil that you use can also affect your vaping experience, which is why it’s important to learn and understand the components of a vape kit regardless of whether you’re using starter kits or you’re a veteran vaper.

What Resistance Vape Coil Should I Choose?

The type of vape coil that you choose is dependent on your vaping preference and style. The rule of thumb is that any vape coil with a coil resistance of more than 1.0ohm is considered to be a mouth to lung (MTL) coil, producing small amounts of vapour.

Meanwhile, coils with a coil resistance of below 1.0ohm are regarded as sub ohm coils (sub as ‘below’, thus ‘sub ohm’; under (1.0)ohm) and are more suitable for ‘cloud chasing’ or sub ohm vaping, where huge clouds of vapour are able to be created. For those wanting a completely different take on e-cigarettes, sub ohm vaping offers a unique vaping experience, especially for new vapers who wouldn’t have had the opportunity to experience this vaping style otherwise.

Please note that vape coils have a recommended wattage output, meaning that the compatible device that you use should be set within the suggested wattage range.

If the device has a fixed wattage output, then this shouldn’t concern you as the wattage output for the coils of this particular device will match the device’s preset. An example of this is the Innokin Endura T20S Kit, which has a fixed power output of 18W. As such, the Innokin Prism S coils are suitable for this device, both the 0.8ohm coil (13W - 14W) and the 1.5ohm coil (16W - 18W).

Many recent models of vape kits, especially those with adjustable power levels, include a coil resistance technology that can detect the resistance of the coil being used, automatically configuring the power level based on the vape coil. This is evidenced by the Aspire Flexus Q Kit, which is compatible with Aspire AF mesh coils of two resistances – 0.6ohm (15W - 18W) and 1.0ohm (12W - 15W).

But, with all this in mind, what’s the difference between MTL vape coils and sub ohm vape coils?

Mouth to Lung Vape Coils

MTL vape coils are ideal for cigarette smokers transitioning to vaping as they replicate the sensation of smoking a traditional tobacco cigarette. The name describes the process excellently – you inhale vapour into your mouth, which is carried all the way to your lungs.

Higher resistance coils are best suited to be used with e-liquids of a higher PG ratio that’ll give you a greater throat hit. In particular, e-liquids of higher nicotine strengths are suggested for MTL coils.

This will feel incredibly familiar for new vapers, which is exactly why we recommend starting with vape kits that support MTL coils – such as the Aspire PockeX AIO Kit, which has an easy-to-use design that’s perfect for beginners.

This vape kit is compatible with the Aspire PockeX 1.2ohm Kanthal coil that is completely beginner-friendly and great for MTL inhalation that imitates cigarette smoking. The coil can be used with high strength nicotine e-liquids, as well as high PG juice, 50/50 liquids, and nic salt e-liquids.

As you start to get used to vaping, you may want to try other vaping styles, which is where sub ohm vape coils come in.

Sub Ohm Vape Coils

Unlike MTL vape coils, sub ohm vape coils are designed for direct to lung (DTL) inhalation, meaning that vapour is inhaled straight into your lungs instead of being held in your mouth first like with MTL vapes.

As sub ohm vape coils require a high power output, you’ll also need an e-cigarette device that can accommodate this. At TABlites, our collection of sub ohm vape kits offer absolute power, control, and vapour for experienced vapers

When it comes to sub ohm vaping, e-liquids with a high VG ratio and low nicotine strength are ideal. This is why sub ohm vaping is not necessarily recommended for new vapers who have recently switched from smoking cigarettes, as the nicotine level may not be enough to help them overcome any cravings.

High VG content in e-liquids provides a smoother throat hit compared to high PG e-liquids – and, although you may not receive as much flavour with the former in comparison to the latter, this is easily countered by producing more vapour.

For sub ohm vaping, we suggest using a sub ohm vape kit like the VOOPOO Vinci X 2 Kit, a powerful vape kit with an adjustable power range of 5-80W, making it great for both casual and sub ohm vaping.

This vape kit is compatible with all VOOPOO PnP series coils – but it already comes with the PNP-VM1 0.3ohm coil and the PNP-VM6 0.15ohm coil. Both support DTL vaping, working best with 60% VG or higher e-liquids, and creating large vapour clouds as a result of the mesh coil build.

How to Know When You Should Change Your Vape Coils

Now that you have a better understanding of vape coils, it’s time to learn about how to know when vape coils should be changed. Although vaping is an enjoyable experience for many, when investing in a vape kit, you should be aware of the maintenance needed to ensure that your device performs at its best so that you’re getting the best bang for your buck.

There are certain signs that indicate that it may be time to replace your kit’s vape coils, which is why it’s a good idea to know how to identify them early on. How frequently you use your device can impact how often you may need to change your coil – but, regardless of whether you’re a heavy vaper or not, it’s suggested to replace coils at least once a month.

What Are the Signs That Hint It’s Time for Coil Replacement?

  • Weak or ‘off’ e-liquid flavour
  • Less vapour production
  • Dark e-liquid
  • Gurgling or leaking from vape
  • Dry hits
  • Burnt taste

Particularly, if you start experiencing a burnt taste whenever you take a puff, immediately stop using the vape as you may have pushed your coil past its lifespan and now the vape is simply burning the coil. Not only is this unpleasant to inhale, but it may also be harmful to your health.

Instead, change your coil as soon as possible to avoid more burnt hits.

Making Your Coils Last

Taking the necessary steps to ensure that your coils last is ideal if you’re looking to save money in the long run, as regularly having to change coils due to poor maintenance can end up being costly. But, how can you make sure that your vape coils last as long as they’re meant to without early damage?

Firstly, whenever you install a new coil or even when you purchase a new e-cigarette, it’s crucial that you prime the vape coil to help prevent the likelihood of it burning out, amplifying the flavour and improving your overall vaping experience.

In terms of using the vape, taking draws in quick succession, also known as chain vaping, may also cause your wick to dry out faster as you’re not allowing it to soak up the e-liquid at an adequate pace. Instead, it doesn’t soak enough e-liquid between puffs, which can quickly lead to the death of your coil.

To avoid this, wait at least 30 seconds before taking another puff so that the wick is given enough time to absorb the proper amount of e-liquid.
