Disposable vapes (sometimes known as puff bars) are vape devices that are designed to be disposed of once they’re finished - it does what it says on the tin!
They are an easy-to-use vape option that works right out of the packet. These devices come pre-charged and pre-filled with a range of flavours of e-liquid, so you don’t have to worry about changing coils, recharging batteries or filling the device with e-liquid. All you need to do is puff and go, and then when you’re done, simply safely dispose of the device and open up the next one.
Disposable e-cigs are made up of the same main components as regular vape devices. However, these parts are all built-in and are not user-replaceable. HOW DO DISPOSABLE VAPES WORK?
Disposable vapes are ready to use out of the packet, they will provide approximately 600 puffs. When you inhale on the mouthpiece and no vapour is produced, dispose of the device and start a fresh one.
Disposable e cigarettes are constructed from various parts:
- Battery;– The integrated battery powers the device. The battery is pre-charged and single-use.
- Cartridge/Pod– Reservoir chamber that holds the e-liquid. Prefilled and cannot be reused.
- Atomiser Coil– The atomiser coil is the heating element. Around the atomiser coil, there is a cotton-wicking material that delivers e-liquid to the coil. When the device is activated the battery sends power to the coil to heat the coil. When the e-liquid contained within the pod cartridge is heated, it produces a vapour.
- Nic Salt E-Liquid– Nic salt or nicotine salt e-liquids deliver incredible flavour and allow you to vape higher-strength e-liquids without a harsh throat hit. They provide a super smooth inhale and closely replicate the sensation of smoking a regular cigarette.
- Outer Casing– The outer casing shell holds all the parts together.
- Mouthpiece– The mouthpiece or drip tip is the part of the disposable vape that you inhale on.
For many years, disposables were used primarily by new vapers and were designed to emulate the experience of smoking a cigarette as closely as possible. These “cig-a-like” devices came in the shape, size and design of a traditional cigarette.
As vaping has become more popular, disposable vapes have changed too. You’ll surelyrecognise common brands like Elf Barsand Geek Bars for their small size, brightly coloured casing and ergonomic mouthpiece designs.
These don’t look like cigarettes anymore, but that doesn’t make them any less effective. Vaping can be a valuable tool to help you quit smoking, and disposable vapes are some of the most accessible devices to help you get started!
HOW TO VAPE A DISPOSABLE DEVICE
One of the first questions you might have when looking at all the vaping options on the market today (and there area lot) is “How do you use a disposable vape?”
Short answer: Disposable devices are simply activated by inhaling on the mouthpiece.
The majority of disposables are draw activated, which means all you need to do to get the device working is inhale. Sensors in the vape will be triggered by the inhaling of air and will fire up the coil to create vapour. All you need to do with a disposable vape is open the box and take a drag. This will power the kit on and provide you with a satisfying vape experience instantly and without any fuss.
Some disposable vapes will have button activated mechanisms, which means you just have to press a button while inhaling to activate the heating coil. However, among the new generation of disposables (including Elf Bars, Geek Bars, and Lost Mary products), this is becoming less common, and themajority of popular disposable vapes on the market today are draw activated.
Simplicity is the name of the game when it comes to disposable non-refillable vapes - there are no settings to adjust, coils to change or e-liquid to refill, making them extremely easy and convenient to use.
This simplicity, along with the low upfront costs of a disposable vape, are a couple of the main reasons why many users who are new to vaping start on this type of vape.
Why does my disposable vape taste burnt?
If your disposable tastes burnt, you’re probably experiencing a dry hit! If you’re brand new to vaping and are using a disposable device, this is likely to be your first time experiencing a dry hit. You may rush to the conclusion that your vape bar is broken, but that’s not necessarily the case.
A dry hit happens when you draw from your vaping device and there's not enough juice on the wicking material inside. So rather than the taste of your e-liquid, you get a hit of burnt cotton which is nobody's favourite vape.
If you’re using a more advanced vape with removable components, then the issue might be with your setup, your wick, or your e-liquid. However, if you’re just using a simple disposable vape, then all it means is that you’re out of juice! Simply throw away that vape and start a new one.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
There are so many different options available in the world of vaping today that it can seem impossible to make the right choice and get the best disposable vape for you. Pros of Disposable Vapes
A disposable vape is a great way to transition from smoking cigarettes, as they are easy to use and have very inexpensive upfront costs. This means you can experiment with different flavours before finding your favourite!
Disposables also have a smoother and more effective delivery of nicotine compared to other types of starter kits because they use Nicotine Salts e-liquid rather than standard (freebase) nicotine. This means that if you are struggling with nicotine cravings, disposable vapes are effective at satisfying those cravings.
Disposables are small and compact, so you can carry them wherever you go, and they fit neatly into a bag or a pocket. As they are built with the e-liquid pre-filled, disposable vapes are also far less likely to leak than other kinds of vapes.
Cons of Disposables
Cheap disposable vapes are a great option when you want to save money in the short term, but they don't last very long. You may consider buying a refillable vape instead as this will save you money in the long run. Pod vapes or pre-filled cartridge vapes are a good middle ground if you’re looking for convenience, but also to save a little money.
Non-refillable vapes are worse than refillable vapes from a sustainable perspective, as they are single-use. These vapes are made almost entirely of plastic and metal, and their components are fully integrated. This makes it very difficult to recycle disposable vapes, so they almost always end up in a landfill. The battery components of disposable vapes should be recycled, but uptake in this kind of recycling isn’t high, and some local authorities don’t even offer it as a local government service.
Disposables are also much less powerful than more advanced vapes. If you’re interested in upgrading your vaping experience, you’ll likely need to switch to a pod vape, sub-ohm vape or other kinds of cartridge vape. Upgrading will allow you to experiment with different styles of vaping and different types of e-liquid, which isn’t possible with a disposable vape.
E-LIQUID IN DISPOSABLE VAPES EXPLAINED
The e-liquid that you get in disposable vapes is the same as you find in traditional refillable vapes. Disposables, like regular e-liquids, come in a range of flavours, compositions and nicotine strengths. It can be a bit of trial and error to get the right vape for you, which is why disposable is a great starter option. They're affordable and available in a massive range of flavours and strengths, so if you don't get on with one type of disposable, there are plenty more to try out there!
Which strength of disposable do I need?
Like all vapes, disposables are available in a range of nicotine strengths. The right nicotine strength differs from person to person and can be affected by lots of different factors. Some of these factors include:
- How long you have been vaping for
- How often do you vape
- How much vapour you inhale per puff
- How long do your vape sessions last
- Your vaping style
- The type of e-liquid you use
- How many cigarettes you're used to smoking per day (if you're vaping to quit smoking)
The standard nicotine level in most vapes (including big brands like Geek Bar disposables or Elf Bar disposables) is either 10mg/ml or 20mg/ml. In line with TRPR rules, nicotine products like e-liquid can't be stronger than 20mg/ml.
If you feel lightheaded when you’re vaping or get a sore, scratchy sensation in your throat as you inhale, you might be on too high of a nicotine dosage. Try switching to a lower nicotine Vape Juice, or even a nicotine-free e-liquid!
On the other hand, if you find that when vaping, you aren't getting enough nicotine to satisfy your cravings, you might want to look into a stronger e-liquid or try a nicotine salt e-liquid.
Nic salts use a slightly different chemical process to extract nicotine from the tobacco leaf. This means that it reacts slightly differently in the body compared to traditional nicotine (known as freebase nicotine). The advantage of nicotine salt e-liquid is that it delivers a stronger nicotine rush while still providing a smooth throat hit, and without requiring higher (and more dangerous) doses of nicotine.
