5 Tips for Making the Switch this Stoptober

Stoptober is coming up and if you’ve chosen to quit smoking cigarettes either by Making the Switch to E-Cigarettes or any other way you’re 5 times more likely to quit for good if you make it through 28 days.

But sometimes you need a little helping hand, so here are our top 5 Tips for Making the Switch:

 Remove the Temptation

Get rid of the temptation to light up a cigarette by removing anything that would encourage you to do so.

Get rid of your cigarettes, get rid of your lighter, get rid of your ashtrays. If you don’t see anything that reminds you of cigarettes you will be less tempted to give in and light up.

Get the Right Strength

If you’ve chosen to use an e-cigarette to help you manage those nicotine cravings you’re already on the right track, but you need to make sure that your e-cig is going to be an effective replacement.

Make sure you’re getting the right nicotine strength for you. If you feel like you could do with a cigarette even when you’re vaping then you probably aren’t using a high enough strength.

Also bear in mind that you may find yourself using your e-cigarette more often than you would be smoking; it’s completely normal to take a couple of drags more regularly as you won’t use it for the same amount of time as you would take smoking a whole cigarette.

Tell Your Friends

By letting your friends and family know that you’re trying to stop smoking cigarettes they can help you out in a lot of ways, from moral support to making sure not to put you in situations where you’re likely to light up.

Explain to them that an e-cigarette is a way of still taking in nicotine that is 95% safer than smoking tobacco. Some of them may even want to give it a go and you can quit together!

Keep Your E-Cigarette on Hand

If you’re out and about and you remember that you left your e-cigarette on the table at home you’re much more likely to find the nearest shop and buy cigarettes than to wait until you get home before you can use it.

Keep your e-cigarette charged up, keep a fresh cartomiser or a full tank on it and you’ve always got something with you that can fend off those cravings, keeping you away from the shop and away from the cigarettes. Tie a string around your finger if you have to (or pick up a lanyard and have your e-cig with you all the time).

Talk to a Professional

If you’ve decided that now’s the time to quit the best thing you can do is chat to a professional about it. Talk to your GP or your local Stop Smoking Service. They can advise you and give you even more handy tips to keep you on the right track.

You can even visit the Stoptober Facebook Page to get access to all of their support and information too.
