What is Stoptober?
Every October smokers up and down the country make the choice to ditch the cigs, with an increasing number choosing to make the switch to vaping!
If you don’t smoke for four weeks during Stoptober 2018, you’re 5 times more likely to stop for good!
By choosing not to smoke cigarettes for just four weeks, smokers can begin to remove all the risks associated, no matter your age!
What is Vaping? Who are Vapers?
Vaping allows vapers to still take in nicotine without having to burn tobacco leaves, which releases thousands of very harmful chemicals.
By heating a mixture of nicotine solution and a base made up of Propylene Glycol* and Vegetable Glycerine** vaping devices, aka e-cigarettes, create a vapour that can be inhaled just like the smoke from an analogue cigarette. There are hundreds of different devices with various shapes, power levels and even some extra functions like working as portable chargers for other devices, but all operate in the same basic way. A battery heats a wire that is kept saturated in e-liquid to produce vapour.
Since 2014 the percentage of over 18s who smoke has dropped from 18% to 15% while the percentage of those who have tried vaping has risen from 15% to 19%!
There are now reportedly 2.8 million vapers in the UK compared with 7.4 million smokers. The NHS reports that 20,000 people switch to vaping every year!1
An expert independent review by Public Health England has concluded that vaping is 95% safer than smoking.
Professor Ann McNeill, King’s College London and independent author of the review, said:
“E-cigarettes could be a game changer in public health in particular by reducing the enormous health inequalities caused by smoking.”Professor Ann McNeill, King’s College London
When you ditch your cigs for a vape it has a huge positive impact on your health almost immediately. In time you can even get back to being just as healthy as a non-smoker! No matter your age, swapping to vaping is the smartest health decision you can make, so what better opportunity to make the switch than Stoptober?
Professor Peter Hajek, Queen Mary University London and independent author of the PHE review said:
“My reading of the evidence is that smokers who switch to vaping remove almost all the risks smoking poses to their health. Smokers differ in their needs and I would advise them not to give up on e-cigarettes if they do not like the first one they try. It may take some experimentation with different products and e-liquids to find the right one.”Professor Peter Hajek, Queen Mary University London

*Propylene Glycol (PG) is a liquid used to carry the flavour and nicotine in e-liquid. It has been used in products as varied as food, medicine, makeup and many others for almost 70 years
**Vegetable Glycerine (VG) is a vegetable-derived liquid that provides most of the visible vapour produced by an e-cigarette. It has similar applications to PG.
